The nber’s annual Toronto conference on the economics of ai, organised by Ajay Agrawal, Joshua Gans, Avi Goldfarb and Catherine Tucker. This year’s edition leaned hard on China. Day 1 had three papers — ai and global drug development, generative-ai hiring by Chinese firms, and what Chinese ai patent counts actually measure — and day 2 one, on generative ai and a Chinese job-matching platform; each had a discussant. The three panels (geopolitics, open weights, robotics) are not digested; their transcripts are kept with the recordings.
